Have you ever hear of the expression “Hot as Haiti’s”?
Well this month’s September book was all about living in that heat. However, while discussing Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende we were sitting in Maureen Callaway’s yard under shade trees sipping fruit punch and eating scrumptious Iced Banana Cake.
This author writes great stories that always include politics, world geography, and women’s issues. Some of the other trademarks of Allende are superstitions, ghosts and spirits. I won’t go into the characters because there were many and she gave them long or difficult names that we will never remember……..
Island beneath the Sea was a story full of adventures between France, Haiti, and New Orleans. The webs Allende spun were of the 40 years of bondage for the main character Zarite. The cast of many included women, their children, the Revolt in Haiti, naturally there were some bad guys, and good guys. Like a cool summer breeze the end of the story had a satisfying conclusion. It was a good summer read, we all enjoyed it.
