Our Book Club members had a very interesting discussion about the book Empty Mansions by Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell, Jr. It starts with the story of W. A. Clark who was born in a log cabin yet became incredibly wealthy through copper mining, developed the city of Las Vegas, and served in the U.S. Senate.
Although W. A. built four fantastic mansions, his one surviving daughter, Huguette, did not live in any of them for the last two decades of her life. Instead she spent those 20 years in a hospital room until her death at 104. This book follows the Clark family from the 19th century to the 21st century, and finally the battle over a $300 million inheritance.
