Thirteen ladies gathered at the home of Valerie Taylor-Crow to discuss “The Chaperone” by Laura Moriarty. This book illustrates the rich history of the 1920’s, 30’s and beyond touching on issues like the orphan trains to equal rights for women. Only a few years becoming a silent film star, fifteen-year old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas to study dance at the famous Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. She is accompanied by Cora Carlisle, a thirty-six year old chaperone who is neither friend or mother. Young Louise is stunningly beautiful but arrogant and has a lack of respect for convention. This is in contrast to Cora who is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip. The consensus of opinion from the group was a positive rating although a few ladies commented that the saga spreading over a 50-year period was a little overwhelming as it covered a range of topics and injustices.
