We had 16 ladies at the May book club meeting and we had a great discussion about Anthony Doerrs book All The Light We Cannot See. This book takes place in occupied France during the second world war. It tells the story of two teenagers, one a blind girl and the other a German orphan boy in the service of the Nazi army. Marie Laure leaves Paris with her father and a valuable diamond. They flee to great uncle Eitenne’s home in the walled city of Saint Malo where Marie Laure and her uncle begin to help the allies by sending information from a contraband radio. Though very young, Werner is pressed into military service because of his genius with radios and all things electronic..
While Werner is in Saint Malo hunting Marie Laure’s broadcasts, the Allies attack the city. Both are trapped. Eventually Marie Laure’s broadcasts save Werner and in return he finds her, falls in love with her, and saves her before she can be found by a German officer who is prepared to kill her in his search for the Sea of Flames diamond.
