Nine ladies gathered at the home of Phyllis Earls for an enjoyable afternoon and lively discussion of our book of the month “The Burgess Boys”, written by Elizabeth Strout. The Burgess Boys is a New York Times bestseller, and Strout also wrote “Olive Kitteredge”, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, in 2008.
The Burgess Boys explores how the tragedy of the father’s death affects the lives of Bob Burgess, his twin sister Susan, and their older brother Jim, into their middle years. The two brothers have left their hometown years ago but are brought back home after Susan’s son, Zach, unwittingly commits a terrible act, and she desperately needs their help. This is a great study of family dynamics; how would their lives have been if not for the tragic death of their father, and how will they be going forward?
