“Delicious!” by Ruth Reich.
Ruth Reichl has written many things as a restaurant critic, editor of Gourmet magazine, and author of five memoirs. Following the demise of Gourmet, she added writer of fiction. “Delicious!” Is a tasty blend of her experience and imagination. Although most of the story is set firmly in the 21st century, she provides a culinary snapshot of WWII through the factionalized correspondence between a young girl in Akron, Ohio and the iconic food writer, James Beard. Who knew that sautéed milked pods taste like cheese! Reich shows a sensitivity to food, people and place. The reader is able to savor foods and flavors, the quirkiness of people and the uniqueness of place–especially those that showcase food. A much appreciated and not to be missed bonus of the book is her recipe for “Billie’s Gingerbread” and tips for entertaining.
