June's Book Club was hosted at the home of Sheris Fine. The book 'A Piece of the World', written by Christina Baker Kline, was chosen by Virginia Felker. It was inspired by a painting the author has seen by Andrew Wyeth. One of his most recognized works- "Christina's World' portrays a woman dragging herself across the family farm field towards a distant home.
The main character, Cristina Olsen, lead a life limited by her progressive illness, that severely impaired her mobility and life circumstances. Her parents choices along with her own, compounded the consequences of how her life would play out.
Cristina became Andrew Wyeth's muse and most famous subject.
Art books of Wyeth's paintings were enjoyed by the book club and enhanced our discussion. Many of his works done during his lengthy stays in the rural and rustic house; were of the homes interior, and surrounding landscapes and barn. These images were aptly described in the poignant novel.
