One of our newer members Judith Fonarow hosted the September meeting and her report follows:
Last Wednesday, September 8, was my first time hosting our book club, and it was so enjoyable. We discussed the book I had chosen, Isabelle Allende's, A Long Petal of the Sea, and we all agreed we learned a lot more about the Spanish Civil War, and the exodos of more than 2,000 Spanish immigrants to Chile. We also learned that the man responsible for this was Chile's most famous poet, Pablo Neruda. So, while this historical novel shed much light on the these events, I think we came to the same conclusion that although the book was a good read, it was not exactly a page-turner. It was perhaps too long, or involved too many characters to be the kind of book one cannot put down. Now, the next novel we will be discussing is a book I couldn't put down. I'll say no more until our next meeting.
