The New Book Buddies gathered at the home of Denise Fikes to talk through the many themes of the book Atonement by Ian McEwan. Set in England just before the start of WWII, the story begins with a misinterpreted scene between two of the characters, by an overly imaginative young girl. The author shows how easily truth can be distorted by preconceived ideas, and the many negative consequences which can be the result. There were varying thoughts and opinions on this book. The shift from imagined drama to the brutal real drama of WWII was difficult. The theme of atonement and if it was ever achieved, led to some interesting side discussions.
As we begin planning our reads and hosting schedule for 2027, be sure to contact Denise Fikes if you wish to be a part of this group!
We’ll next be meeting on November 16 at 3:00, at the home of Sandra Schulz. Our book to discuss for that meeting is The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry.
